Detached Retina

upthejunction on 30 August:

I had RD operation 25 days ago including a gas bubble - the retina fully detached. Although I appear to have all around vision, shapes are distorted, objects are longer and focus is wavy. Has anyone else experienced this? I had a cataract removed from the same eye a year ago and a retinal tear repaired in my left eye 6 weeks ago - thank-you for any response

Hello captain5bear,
It has been almost 2 years now since my posterior v procedure. I experienced exactly what u describe but that will improve with time.Vertical lines are still wavy but greatly improved ... it is a matter of time and my ophthalmoligist advised me that retina's can tke up to 3 years to heal. Patience is needed to go through the healing process. Don't be discouraged, each day a little gets better.

Sorry to hear of your problems. I had a detachment in my right eye in the 60s and again in the 70s. Later I had cateracts removed as well. Whilst the sight in the affected eye was never that good at least I could see something out of it reasonably clearly. In September last year it came off again and after 3 Ops I am in a similar situation to you. The laser treatment has left me with practically no vision in the right eye and in poor light I have trouble seeing anything despite my left eye being pretty good. A feeling of being unbalanced makes walking on uneven surfaces and up and down steps in poor light very difficult. Also I find that I cannot judge close up distances very well eg pouring something into a glass although long distance in my good eye is very good thank goodness. I too had panic attacks at night believing I could not see at all so ended up having a light on for a few weeks. Those attacks soon disappear.
I find now that although I am frustrated about the diminished vision, nevertheless have got used to it. You do have to remind friends and family and others that you are unable to see much to the (left in your case) and right in mine. I still bump into people approaching from the right side of me in shops etc. I am now resigned to the fact that this is a lifetime problem for me now but nevertheless still have one good eye. I hope that everything turns out ok for you and good luck.

I've also been worried about the distortion in my vision. It's interesting to hear that it has happened to others but I would also like to know why it happens.

I had a retinal tear repaired with laser in early May, then surgery on 31 July following bleeding from the retina for detached retina plus vitrectomy, another tear repaired with laser and gas bubble inserted.

Its now 6 weeks post op, the gas bubble has nearly gone, but I have blurry vision, straight lines are wavy and shapes are longer. On the plus side I can see clearly through the wavy bits for close vision but not so well for distance. I was told to expect that vision could take several months to settle, but wasn't expecting distorted vision. I am short sighted and just imagined that these changes would be confined to changes in distance vision.

I have a followup appointment at the hospital in 2 weeks, so hope they will explain things then.
