I was sent this book as one of my computer choices and I confess my heart sank when I realised what it was. I had heard such terrible things about her previous book The Gathering. Apparently a very bleak story. But, it was a long and wet weekend so I gave it a try, more because I felt I should than because I wanted to.
The book is about Gina, who reminisces about her affair with the love of her life Sean. Not a promising beginning I thought but wait and see.
I admit I was surprised. I found the story quite engaging and although the characters were not necessarily easy to be sympathetic towards, the story kept moving along at a decent pace. The plot was perhaps a bit predictable but there were enough surprised along the way to keep me interested. At just over seven hours it was not too long and so I didn't really have time to be bored by it. The author certainly likes to write a realistic story, no glossing things over or romanticising things. She tells it straight warts and all. An unexpectedly interesting diversion from my normal preferences of light fiction and crime.
I would read another of this author's books although perhaps not The Gathering as nobody seems to have a good word to say for it.
