Who are your favourite narrators?
I am currently reading "A suitable boy" by Vikram Seth and narrated by Nigel Graham. He is so good at male and female and young and old characters, it is such a pleasure and really brings the story alive.

I like Kim Hicks. Pleasant, gentle, easy to listen to, doesnt sound bored. Keeps things alive and interesting.
She is excellent at pronouncing difficult names and words. I particularly enjoyed Last Rituals by Yrsa Sigurdardottir TB 17000.

I have started listening to Tess of the D'urbervilles read by Anna Bentinck. It is wonderful!
Also, I have just added Gerald Dickens, the well-known Charles Dickens's great great grandson, who has read some of Charles Dickens's novels, including The old curiosity shop. He is so good at character voices, especially Nell's grandfather and Mr Quilp. (Please correct my spelling if necessary, I am not sure how to spell this name.)

Emilia Fox does a fantastic job with Pride and prejudice. To one of you who mentioned Emma, listen to it read by Juliet Stevenson, it is great!

Michael Tudor Barnes is another favourite narrator of mine. He has such a strong characterful voice and he reads beautifully. Richard Burnip is also very good. Often I search for a new book by looking for books read by a particular narrator. On several occasions I have had to stop listening to a book I like because I can't cope with the way the narrator reads.

A total vote for Karen Cass! She does a great job with Villette by Charlotte Bronte. Not only is her voice pleasant and not only can she create several voices, but she is able to do French dialects as well!
Unlike Davina Porter, she pronounces the title right. (Despite the fact that the novel itself is English, the name Villette is French after all.) And now I'll quote from one of you. She keeps the story alive, just like the narrator one of you mentioned before.
Teresa Gallagher's voice is one of the sweetest female voices I've ever heard. She and Sean Barrett do an excellent job with Bleak house by Charles Dickens.
Clare Wille's performance of Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell is a pleasure to listen to as well. Therefore I can't wait to listen to North and south read by her!
I also really like Juliet Stevenson's readings of Austen novels, Shirley by Charlotte Bronte narrated by Anna Bentinck, Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf read by Virginia Leishman.
Among male narrators, Martin Jarvis is one of my favourites. His readings of Dickens novels are absolutely outstanding, but so are Simon Vance's!
John Lee can make me love any book, too.
