For the almost 30 years whenever I needed ID anywhere I waved my driving license. However, I am due to see my optician on Saturday and I suspect that he may confirm what I already know - that my sight is not good enough to drive at the moment.
I haven't driven since August Bank Holiday when I experienced a rapid deterioration in my vision so I haven't been risking anybody else just in case anybody wondered!
My query is, since I don't have a passport what else can I offer as ID if I have to tell the DVLA that I am no longer fit to drive? Is my only option to pay for a passport and struggle to have a passport interview as I don't have an old one to renew?
Any ideas would be welcome.

As an aside. When I said at work a while ago that I was concerned that I might be forced to stop driving because of failing vision a colleague advised me to get a moped.................I resisted the urge to tell them to get a brain!

Thanks for the replies.

The optician said "no driving but don't tell the DVLA just yet as your brain may adapt sufficiently for you to drive again".

I think I shall apply for a passport in readiness though as the Post Offie didn't know what I was talking about. I don't have any other id and past experience says bank statements and utility bills are insufficient on their own.

I don't want to start a row on compulsory ID but I do think free or low cost "official" ID cards should be available for all those who don't go abroad and can't drive for health reasons (my dad lost his license when he had a stroke and a workmate hers when her epilepsy got out of control so its not just posters on here that have a need!)

Now to get my head around not being able to hop in my car when the fancy takes me.

This is a problem I've had in the past. I usually use a bill in my name and my bus pass or work pass both of which have photoes. But I've had these turned down as ID before. Do they know what hoops you have to jump through to get a bus pass? They should be considered in the same way that driving licences are for ID.

I refuse to pay for an ID card or carry my passport everywhere with me just so I can prove who I am.

Cheers

Val

I think if you go to your local post office they have forms for official ID cards. Selina x
