Catching the bus

How do you find travelling by bus? Do you have any hints and tips to help other blind and partially sighted people be more confident using buses?

I must admit i have only been on a bus with a carer trouble is i can't walk far i had better get used to it as our mobility car car goes back in April so will have no choice but to use a bus like all of us its hard to see a bus coming if at all never mind where its going etc bet other blind people are in the same position with this wonderfully government.

I really struggle at times. Can't always see the buses come, which isn't helped by someone deciding they're going to park right in the way.

I've never liked catching buses and now it's getting harder and harder. Some passengers (am I the only one who hates asking for help?) and bus drivers are brilliant though.

I used to find bus travel almost impossible then I had a little training. I stand at the bus stop holding one of those plastic bus cards as all the busses used to drive past me and their excuse was I never put my hand out to stop them. You would think as I was standing with my guide dog they would guess I was waiting for a bus but no that is too simple. Now I can get a bus to stop for me so the next problem is finding a seat as all the busses seats are arranged differently but this has been sorted out as my guide dog finds a seat for me. The next problem is finding my stop, I found asking the driver was no good as they would change drivers or just forget. I bought a Kapten plus sat nav and have got all my bus stops saved on it so when I get on the bus and sit down I set my sat nav to tell me about 100 yards before my stop and I press the bell then I just get off when the bus stops.
I hope this helps,
