Action for Blind People are hosting a residential field study break for 12-17 year olds in Essex from 28th July - 4th August 2012. Activities will include sailing, caving and water sports plus many more!

They are an opportunity for visually impaired young people to experience the outdoor environment, make new friends and enjoy a break away from home.
We require volunteers to support the young people across the week and help the staff host a fun, safe and memorable experience.

Please note that you must be 18+ to volunteer in this role and an enhanced CRB check will be required.

What will I be doing?

  • Engaging, encouraging and supporting the young people across all elements of the study break
  • Helping to organise and facilitate games, meal times and general activities in support of children, service staff and centre activity leaders
  • Enabling the young people to be independent through one to one support and guiding
  • Helping to promote an inclusive, positive and enjoyable atmosphere

What skills and qualities can I bring to this role?

  • To have an interest in working with children & young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN)
  • The ability to engage with young people
  • A responsible, understanding and approachable nature
  • Availability to stay away from home for a week
  • Ability to seek support as required with new situations and be willing to learn procedures and skills to ensure the safety of the children and young people
  • A sense of fun and willingness to join in!

When will I be needed?

28th July 2012 - 4th August 2012

Where will I be volunteering?

The residential study group is taking place at Bradwell Centre, Southminister, Essex, a scenic activity venue set on the Blackwater estuary.

What will I gain from the role?

  • An understanding of the needs of young people with sight loss and special educational needs
  • Experience of working with young people
  • A sense of satisfaction at being able to support a young person to learn new skills, make friends and become increasingly independent
  • The opportunity to be part of a friendly team of volunteers

What support will I be given?

  • A volunteer induction package
  • Visual Impairment awareness training
  • A training session and support from professional children and young person's service staff (you will not be asked to do anything which is beyond your ability or be left in charge of young people alone)
  • Expenses - all out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed
