Can you build a rapport with people and put them at ease? Would you enjoy assisting blind and partially sighted people to continue to live their lives independently? Would you be able to help people claim the benefits they are entitled to?

If so, then Action for Blind People's busy local team urgently needs YOU to help people stay independent and to guide them through the benefits maze. The role is important and by giving your time and skills you will be part of a dedicated team of volunteers and staff who make a real difference to the lives of blind and partially sighted people.

This role requires an Enhanced Check for Regulated Activity.

What will I be doing?

  • Contacting blind and partially sighted clients on the telephone to gather information, arrange appointments and discuss their needs

  • Helping blind and partially sighted people to complete their benefits applications (currently Disability Living Allowance, and Attendance Allowance forms)
  • Assisting with photocopying of benefits applications, filing, compiling post and other general office tasks.
  • Researching possible grants available to individuals
  • Keeping up-to-date with benefit changes
  • Following initial meetings with them - contacting people as necessary to check progress of application and ensure all needs are met

What skills and qualities can I bring to this role?

  • Ability to put people at ease, ask questions sensitively and accurately record answers

  • An interest in finding out more about benefits and grants for blind and partially sighted people
  • Understanding of the importance of keeping information confidential
  • Clear speaking voice and good command of English
  • Enjoy the buzz of a busy office environment
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to use your initiative

When will I be needed?

Ideally we would like you to volunteer for a minimum of one morning or afternoon a week (between 10am-1pm or 1.30pm - 4.30pm) Monday to Friday.

Where will I be volunteering?

Initially at Action for Blind People's office at Cringleford Business Centre, Norwich. This role might expand to a weekly drop-in session, and potentially will involve visiting blind and partially sighted people in their own homes.
