Are you passionate about pioneering technology? Would you like to open up a world of opportunities for blind and partially sighted people?

The Innovation Team are interested in making technology accessible to those with a sight problem. Your contribution to this work will be vital.

We are looking for a volunteer to assist our accessibility specialists in providing information on new technologies you discover on the internet. Also, too liaise with blind and partially sighted people by telephone or face to face to invite them to join our network of volunteers who test our products, collecting feedback following the testing of products.

This role does not require a CRB check

What will I be doing?

  • Surfing the internet for news on emerging or new technologies

  • Contacting people by telephone
  • Taking part in user trials
  • Data input
  • Help administer events and manage the liaison with participants
  • Gather event feedback by managing questionnaires and making follow up phone calls

What skills can I bring to this role?

  • An interest in technology and/or business relationships
  • Ability to search the internet, using keywords
  • You will need to have good communication skills and be able to build up a rapport with people within the network
  • You will need to be outgoing person with a friendly and warm nature to put people at their ease
  • You will need to be confident in approaching people whilst not being pushy
  • You will need to be familiar with computers and Microsoft Office applications
  • Good telephone manner is a must

When will I be needed?

Flexible, during office hours - times to be agreed with your volunteer manager.
Exceptionally, we would consider someone who is able to do at least some of the role from home.

What will I gain from the role?

  • Work with a team comprising: web and software developers, ergonomists, and business development executives

  • Learn about the issues faced by blind and partially sighted users of technology
  • Gain experience of user trials, conducted by experts
  • Gain an understanding of our pioneering work that helps anyone with a sight problem - not just with braille and Talking Books, but with imaginative and practical solutions to everyday challenges

What support will I be given?

  • Induction

  • Understanding Sight Loss Pack
  • Expenses - all out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed including expenses to attend training
  • Supervision and support from your volunteer manager/ co-ordinator
