RNIB Redhill Community Living Service has several residential homes in the Redhill area for partially sighted people with learning disabilities and complex needs, as well as participants living at the main service site. To assist participants to get to and from the main site or to take them to other venues, the Community Living Service has two Galaxy cars, and a minibus with a rear lift for wheelchair access.

Volunteer drivers are sought to assist with driving duties for the participants and for day visitors who are partially sighted. It is not necessary for volunteers to have had minibus training as this could be provided.

To comply with RNIB insurance requirements, applicants must be aged 25 or over. The driver must have D1 classification and hold a full clean driving licence for three years or more.

This role will require an enhanced DBS check.

What will I be doing?

  • Provide transport in RNIB vehicles to and from the main site, between residential homes in Redhill and to more outlying areas.
  • Route planning in conjunction with the lead member of staff.
  • Supporting in the delivery of a safe, enjoyable and successful activity under the guidance of the lead staff.
  • Sighted guide assistance when required - training will be provided.
  • Tasks will be varied depending on the needs of the individual.

What skills and qualities can I bring to this role?

  • D1 driver classification and a full clean driving licence for three years or more.
  • The Volunteer needs good communication skills and empathy with blind or partially sighted people with a learning disability.
  • Enthusiasm, confidence and patience.
  • Ability to use your own initiative.
  • Willing to listen and support both verbally and physically when needed during activities.
  • Awareness of health and safety issues.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and a flexible approach.

When will I be needed?

Any time that you can offer will be beneficial and can be pre-agreed with your manager.

You must live within a reasonable distance of the Community Living Service in order to undertake this role.
