Events and Governance Internship

Make a difference to the lives of blind and partially sighted people by helping us to implement changes to our governance by placing members at the heart of our organisation.

Are you proactive, confident, and driven? Do you have excellent organisational skills? An interest or experience in Events Management? Then this exciting, vital role could be for you. Helping us to further develop and support vibrant Regional and Country Member Forums across the UK, you will engage our members in the work and direction of RNIB and enable us to incorporate the views of blind and partially sighted people into our work.

The successful candidate must be prepared to undertake travel throughout the UK (once a week/fortnight) and do the occasional overnight stay.

What will I be doing?

  • Supporting to the development of the member forums by:
  • Providing admin support to forum meetings
  • Updating and maintaining team databases and web pages
  • Liaising with internal and external colleagues on behalf of the team
  • Researching and selecting suitable venues and locations, including conducting preliminary site visits
  • Collating information in order to produce simple reports
  • Contributing to the development of the member forum team processes
  • Ad hoc project work as required

What skills and qualities can I bring to this role?

You will need to be an excellent communicator with the:

  • Experience of or an interest in organising events
  • Experience of or an interest in governance and/or membership structures
  • Demonstrable ability to work proactively, foresee problems and enact workable solutions
  • Confidence to communicate effectively, both verbally (particularly by telephone) and in writing, adapting style to suit the audience
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills
  • Ability to research and collate information in order to produce simple reports.

Highly computer literate you will be capable of using a variety of IT packages with:

  • Effective Excel skills with proven experience of manipulating data within spreadsheets
  • Experience of updating and maintaining databases
  • Ability to both follow and evaluate office procedures and policies

You should have a knowledge of customer care issues with:

  • Experience of relating to a wide cross section of people, i.e. across age groups, cultures, genders, ethnic groups, and religions.

You will need to bring enthusiasm, dedication and a willingness to learn plus:

  • Experience of organising a busy workload
  • The ability to work well independently and as part of a team

When will I be needed?

Ideally three days a week for nine months, however this may be flexible.

Where will I be volunteering?

The post will be based in our Manchester Office - Eccles.

  • Workshop facilitation training
  • Expenses - all out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed including expenses to attend training
  • Supervision and support from your volunteer manager/ co-ordinator, including some career development coaching.
