Do you have an interest in how technology can enable blind and partially sighted people to access information, develop their skills and become independent? Would you like to help them get to grips with modern technology?

By using your knowledge and expertise in ICT and other access technology, you can help reduce people's isolation and exclusion in a world increasingly reliant on computers. A comprehensive training course over four days will be provided to help you to do this.

You will be part of a vibrant team, working across the region helping to deliver training, with opportunities to provide ongoing support for blind and partially sighted people in their homes.

The role requires an Enhanced DBS check.

What will I be doing?

  • Helping technology staff based at Exeter to plan the support for blind and partially sighted students to learn about and understand access technology
  • Providing ongoing support for students at home
  • Demonstrating a variety of technology and technological solutions
  • Setting up ICT equipment
  • One to one familiarisation with software programmes
  • Assisting Technology staff with group training
  • Providing one to one or small group ICT tuition
  • Helping monitor the success of visits and how technology has made a real difference to lives

What skills and qualities can I bring to this role?

  • Good computer skills and knowledge of ICT
  • Computer literate in a variety of standard software programmes such as MS Office
  • An interest in home technology and its potential
  • Knowledge of, or keenness to learn about, access technology
  • Clear and sensitive communication skills
  • Able to give instruction and relate to a wide range of people in a respectful, patient manner
  • Friendly, enthusiastic and reliable
  • Willingness to travel locally to visit blind and partially sighted people in their homes
  • An ability to accurately record customer details, their training and other requirements for further action

When will I be needed?

Volunteer hours are flexible, by mutual agreement.

Four days of initial training are a very important part of induction, and then ongoing training on a regular basis.

Location

Various community venues across Devon and Cornwall with potential visits to people's homes.

  • Expenses - to cover travel and subsistence
  • Management support from Action Technology member of staff
  • Four full days of training covering: teaching and assessment techniques; screen reading technology; screen magnification technology and Apple products
  • A minimum of four days per year ongoing group development sessions to keep up-to-date with access technology improvements
