Are you the person who gets things done? Can you build a rapport with people and put them at their ease? Would you enjoy supporting blind and partially sighted people into employment? Would you be good at helping people look for a job or gain work experience?
If so then Action for Blind People's busy local team urgently needs YOU to help. The role is important and would suit someone with person centred roles e.g. in HR or administration. By giving your time and skills you will be part of a dedicated team of volunteers and staff who make a real difference to the lives of blind and partially sighted people.

This role will not require a DBS check

What will I be doing?

The role is likely to be varied, but will include aspects of:

  • Helping blind and partially sighted people to search for jobs or work experience
  • Supporting individuals with their applications
  • Helping with confidence building and interview techniques
  • Assisting with research into support at work
  • Assist with photocopying, filing and other general office tasks
  • Updating computer records with attendance/outcomes

What skills can I bring to this role?

  • An understanding of what makes a successful job application
  • General IT skills
  • Being organised, and able to keep accurate records

What qualities do I need?

  • Excellent listening skills

  • Ability to motive others
  • Enthusiasm
  • Understanding the importance of keeping information confidential
  • Good standard of written and spoken English
  • Get on well with people and enjoy being part of a team
  • Ability to use your initiative
  • A willingness to engage with the "social model of disability"

When will I be needed?

Ideally we would like you to volunteer for a minimum total of three hours a week.

Where will I be volunteering?

At Action for Blind People's office at Bedminster, Bristol, with potential for tasks to be carried out at home.

What will I gain from the role?

  • Knowledge of Action for Blind People's work and the requirements of people living with sight loss
  • An understanding of the specialist support and advice needed in assisting blind and partially sighted people to find or to retain employment or training

What support will I be given?

  • Induction
  • 'Understanding Sight Loss' training
  • Expenses - all out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed including expenses to attend agreed training
  • Supervision and support from your volunteer manager/ co-ordinator
