The RNIB Visual Impairment and Learning Disabilities (VILD) service supports people with sight problems and learning disabilities, and those who work with them.

RNIB Springfield Day Services focuses around building self-confidence in our service users. We give the chance to develop new skills and gain new experiences by providing a challenging environment with meaningful activities. This prepares our service users to participate fully in other new opportunities. The day service has a particular focus on employment and education.

By providing transport to bring the service users to the centre the role will be maximising service users abilities, skills and levels of independence. This role is subject to membership of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups scheme.

What will I be doing?

Drive the centre vehicles as required

  • Drive the centre minibus
  • Drive / escort service users to and from the Springfield service, and respond to individual needs whilst travelling
  • Assist service users in and out of the vehicle ensuring their safety at all times
  • Accompany service users during involvement in local activities
  • Maintain and develop good relationships with parents and carers of service users who you meet in the course of driving and escort duties
  • Carry out basic maintenance checks of service vehicles, and report any defects identified
  • Ensure vehicles are left in a clean and tidy condition after use
  • Take reasonable care of the Health and safety of yourself and others, and to adhere to RNIB Scotland's Health and Safety policy
  • Participate in informal support and supervision sessions
  • Attend and contribute to regular volunteer team meetings
  • Undertake training as required

What skills can I bring to this role?

  • To drive the Centre minibus volunteers must be aged 25 or over and have 2 years driving experience. They must hold D1 category on their driving licence and be willing to undertake in house Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme (Midas) training.
  • To drive other centre vehicles volunteers must be aged 21 or over and have 2 years driving experience
  • Ability to develop effective and supportive relationships with other volunteers and staff as well as service users, their parents and carers
  • Although not essential, experience of working with learning disabled adults or adults with sight difficulties would be advantageous
  • Ability to take responsibility for own actions and make appropriate decisions without referring to others.

What qualities do I need?

  • Punctual and reliable
  • A positive approach to the involvement and inclusion of people who are affected by disability
  • Ability to respond to distressed people in an empathetic manner
  • Able to remain calm and self controlled under pressure

When will I be needed?

Monday - Friday, 8am - 10.30am or 2.30pm - 5pm.
Flexible working days with a minimum of 2.5 hours commitment per week.

Location

RNIB Springfield Service, Springfield Road, Bishopbriggs, Glasgow, G64 1PN.
Daily reporting to base, transport route advised by management team.
