Computer Group Support Volunteer - Scottish Borders

RNIB Scottish Borders is a new service providing information and support to blind and partially sighted people within the region. It also provides a wide range of activities and services supported by volunteers. Clients have asked if we could develop a computer group base in Galashiels; for this, volunteer support is required to help train and guide members.

You will need to have knowledge of the software Guide and Jaws and be able to lead and guide clients or staff through clear steps, so they may be able to understand the correct approach to the systems being used.

A reliable and flexible individual is required; able to give instruction and relate to a wide range of people in a respectful, patient manner.

Basic training in Guide and Jaws will also be available to assist the volunteer.
This role is subject to membership of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups scheme.

What will I be doing?

  • Setting up equipment
  • One to one and small group training
  • Helping members with computer problems and issues
  • reviewing participant progress and assist in developing their skills
  • recording members attendance

What skills and qualities can I bring to this role?

  • General knowledge in computer skills.
  • Computer literate in Word, email, internet, spreadsheets, databases
  • Clear and sensitive communication skills
  • Enthusiastic approach and identification with the RNIB values for empowering people
  • We would also require someone with the ability to accurately record customer details and their training/other requirements for further action
  • Good organisational skills
  • Computer literate with a knowledge of various packages
  • Good communication skills

When will I be needed?

The group will meet once or twice a week for approximately 2 hours

What will I gain from the role?

  • Understanding Sight Loss Pack
  • Expenses - all out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed including expenses to attend training
  • Supervision and support from your volunteer manager/ co-ordinator
