Services Inclusion Supporter

Do you want to make a real difference to the lives of people with a Visual Impairment and Learning Disability (VILD)? RNIB is looking for volunteers to help us empower our customers to communicate, participate and achieve their full potential.

This role is subject to membership of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups scheme.

What will I be doing?

  • Working with our customers to help them prepare for attendance at meetings, forums and training events
  • Escorting customers to venues (usually by taxi), and providing practical support whilst there
  • Assisting with providing lunch and refreshments
  • Enabling customers to communicate in small groups by note-taking, summarising information, providing feedback and encouragement
  • Providing general assistance and back up for Support Workers as needed

What skills and qualities can I bring to this role?

  • Friendliness, warmth, patience and a helpful attitude
  • A natural empathy with people, an ability to build rapport and help others to feel comfortable
  • A desire to learn about visual impairment, learning disability and alternative forms of communication
  • You might have experience of advocacy or working in a learning disability environment, but this is not essential as training will be provided

When will I be needed?

Support is usually needed for approximately 3 hours per week between Monday-Friday during normal working hours. The duration and frequency of volunteer support sessions is flexible according to your availability and our needs. We ask that volunteers commit to helping us for at least six months due to the amount of training involved.

Location

Customers often meet at our Day Centre in Bishopbriggs, but also need support to travel to various venues around Greater Glasgow.

What will I gain from the role?

  • Invaluable experience in a care role as part of a forward thinking, dynamic team
  • The opportunity to enhance existing skills and gain new ones
  • Experience of working with the UK's leading sight loss charity
  • The satisfaction of knowing you are making a real difference to the lives of people with visual impairment and learning disability

What support will I be given?

  • Induction training
  • Training in Understanding Sight Loss and VILD
  • Expenses - all out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed including expenses to attend training
  • Supervision and support from your volunteer manager/co-ordinator
