This is a unique opportunity to work with blind and partially sighted children and young people (age 0-25) alongside RNIB Scotland's Educational and Family Services Team

We need confident, energetic volunteers to support children and young people on both an individual and group basis at events and activities including leisure, sport and fun educational events.

Due to the nature of this role volunteers need to be over 18.

This role requires membership of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme.

What will I be doing?

  • Acting as a sighted guide and providing mobility support on a one-to-one basis
  • Assisting with individuals' support requirements during an activity, whilst enabling them to be as independent as possible
  • Encouraging and motivating children and young people to get involved in activities
  • Assisting staff with the smooth running of events, activities and residentials which usually involve overnight stays and could take place at weekends

  • A genuine interest in working with children and young people
  • Enthusiasm, confidence, patience and a sense of fun
  • Encourage and promote an positive attitude to sight loss
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • Ability to demonstrate confidentiality as per RNIB policy

When will I be needed?

This will vary according to the Event. Activities and residentials are taking place across Scotland throughout the year - including during school holidays, evenings and weekends. We will contact you in advance when we need your help. You will be asked to commit to the whole activity or residential, including arriving in time to assist with setting up and attending training. The residentials can be a 1-5 night experience.

Various locations throughout Scotland, depending on where the activities are taking place.

  • Expenses - all out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed including expenses to attend training
