RNIB host and facilitate a number of forums for RNIB members get to know each other, discuss issues, search for solutions to problems and come up with bright ideas to keep RNIB moving forward.

We need your help to facilitate our groups and keep the discussions lively, interesting and relevant. If you have excellent communication skills with an ability to get people talking, socialising and meeting other people then this is the role for you!

This role does not require a DBS check

What will I be doing?

  • Encouraging and enabling group discussions, including helping participants feel comfortable contributing to workshops.

  • Facilitating groups offering people with sight problems the chance to discuss topics related to their sight loss with other people who may have similar experiences.
  • Helping to make forum workshops fun, friendly and supportive experiences for all the participants.

What skills and qualities can I bring to this role?

  • The ability to establish good relationships quickly

  • Excellent listening skills
  • Ability to respond sensitively to the practical and emotional content of the group discussions.
  • An enthusiasm for active citizenship - or willingness to learn about it
  • Reliability, flexibility, and a willingness to travel
  • A natural empathy with people and an ability to relate to a wide cross section of people, i.e. age groups, cultures, genders, race, and religion.

When will I be needed?

The time and days you will be required will vary depending on when the forums are taking place. We expect there to be between 6 and 8 days a year. The forums will be during office hours, although some evenings will be required.

We ask volunteers to make a one-year commitment to help ensure the stability of the forum facilitation team.

Location

Various locations across the regions in which you volunteer. Willingness to travel is essential to this role.

What support will I be given?

  • Induction

  • Understanding Sight Loss Pack
  • Expenses - all out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed including expenses to attend training
  • Supervision and support from your volunteer manager/ co-ordinator

In addition, all volunteers have the opportunity to:

  • Discuss their role with the member forum coordinators
  • Attend regular group teleconferences with other member forum facilitators
  • Regularly review their volunteering with their volunteer manager to identify any further support and/or training needs they may have.
