Do you like to tweet? Spend all your time on facebook? Can never be parted from your kindle? Then we would like you to join our Get Connected Crew! We are looking for volunteers with a passion for technology and social media to support blind and partially sighted people to get online.

An Enhanced DBS check is required for this role.

What will I be doing?

  • Working one to one and in groups with blind and partially sighted people

  • Supporting blind and partially sighted people to get online with e-mail, social media and online shopping.
  • Offering training on the accessibility functions of e-book readers and tablets
  • Offering advice and support on how to use new technology, products and software
  • Providing training on access technology packages
  • Sharing your knowledge, skills and experiences with other members of the Get Connected Crew

What skills and qualities can I bring to this role?

  • Expertise in IT, technology and a willingness to learn new skills

  • Willingness to learn about assistive access technology for people with sight loss
  • Friendliness, enthusiasm and reliability
  • Willingness to travel locally to visit blind and partially sighted people
  • A reliable and flexible individual, able to give instruction and to relate to a wide range of people in an empathic and patient manner.
  • Good interpersonal/communication skills and able to work with a range of people from a variety of backgrounds and of different ages
  • Ability to keep up to date and accurate records

When will I be needed?

Flexible, to be discussed with Volunteer manager

Where will I be volunteering?

Community locations including homes, libraries and housing associations in: Rhondda Cynon Taff, Merthyr Tydfil, Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Caerphilly, Torfaen, Bridgend, Blaenau Gwent, Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey.

What support will I be given?

  • Induction
  • Project introduction session
  • Understanding Sight Loss Training
  • In depth training in ICT and accessible technology
  • Supervision and support from your volunteer manager/ co-ordinator
  • Support and guidance from other Get Connected Crew volunteers
  • Expenses - all out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed including expenses to attend training
