To prepare a variety of texts, using a computer braille programme, from which braille can be produced. By transcribing printed texts into braille, and using your excellent attention to detail you could make a real difference to the lives of blind and partially sighted people across the UK.

This role does not require DBS check.

What will I be doing?

To prepare a variety of texts, using a computer braille programme by:
  • Checking a text file produced using a scanner, to ensure the words, punctuation, etc match the original print
  • Ensuring the braille layout conveys the meaning of the print layout, and conforms to the guidelines for RNIB house-style
  • Ensuring the text translates accurately into braille
  • Proofreading and correcting braille produced by other transcribers
  • Working to deadlines to produce braille in a timely and efficient manner

What skills and qualities can I bring to this role?

  • Knowledge of braille, or a keenness to undertake a qualification in it
  • A high level of literacy and attention to detail - including accurate spelling and grammar
  • Ability to read a range of print sizes, e.g. the small print in an index and various typefaces
  • Confident using a computer and have accurate word processing skills
  • Able to work unsupervised
  • Good time management skills to ensure deadlines are met
  • Flexible, reliable and enjoy working as a member of a team
  • Able to adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines

When will I be needed?

This opportunity is open ended and there is no set time commitment, however we hope that volunteers are able to donate enough time to fully utilise the comprehensive training provided by RNIB.

Where will I be volunteering?

This role can be undertaken from Cardiff Transcription Centre or home-based (using own equipment and email account).

What support will I be given?

  • Induction
  • Understanding Sight Loss training
  • Expenses - all out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed including expenses to attend training
  • Training in braille and specialist computer software
  • Supervision and support from your volunteer manager/ co-ordinator
  • Initial and on-going training sessions as appropriate
