Personal shopping Debenhams

We've worked with Debenhams on their enhanced personal shopping service which allows blind and partially sighted customers to shop independently.

An enhanced service for customers with sight loss

Blind and partially sighted people often tell us that shopping for clothes can be a real challenge. Navigating a busy store to find the right item, in the right size and for the right price, can take all the fun out of fashion.

So RNIB teamed up with Debenhams to launch an enhanced personal shopping service for blind and partially sighted customers, to make shopping for clothes easy and enjoyable.

There are 134 Debenhams stores across the UK and Republic of Ireland that offer the service. To find your nearest Debenhams personal shopping service or to book a free appointment call Debenhams on 08445 61 61 61.

Why we're working with Debenhams

How To Look Good Naked, the TV programme hosted by celebrity stylist Gok Wan, is all about making women look and feel fantastic. Last year Gok dedicated an episode to women with sight loss. Gok focused on the story of Di Cram, who lost her sight as a teenager. Gok wanted to explore the challenges she faced when shopping for clothes and the effect that this had on her confidence.

The programme created a lot of buzz in the press and amongst blind and partially sighted people. Inspired by the programme, we spoke to RNIB Members to find out what they thought about clothing and what support they wanted from retail staff. We took everything we were told and have worked with Debenhams to train their personal shopping staff so that they can better serve customers with sight loss.

What is the personal shopping service?

Personal shopping is a free service designed to take the stress out of shopping. Debenhams have upgraded their service to make it excellent for blind and partially sighted customers.

To take advantage of the service, all you need to do is call Debenhams to book your free appointment. Your personal shopper will meet you at a pre-arranged point, such as the store entrance, and show you up to the personal shopping suite. Simply tell the personal shopper what you're looking for and how much you want to spend and then you can sit back and relax whilst they bring you a selection of clothes. Debenhams's personal shoppers have all been trained in guiding and how to describe the colour, shape and cut of a garment so that you can visualise the clothes they show you. The personal shoppers can also tell you about the latest trends and what clothes would suit you best.

Vicki Duncan used the personal shopping service and says:

"I didn't know anything about personal shopping – I thought it was for celebrities but the service is totally free and there's no obligation to buy. It's really easy, I just told the personal shopper what I wanted, how much I wanted to spend and she did the rest."
