Technology support squad
RNIB's Technology Support Squad (TSS) is a free national service that can set up, fix problems with and help you use your technology.
There are thousands of gadgets that can make living with sight loss easier, but it's hard to know where to start once you get them home. Sometimes they don't work as you expect, or you have a problem with them. If you're having trouble setting up or getting the most out of your technology, our Technology Support Squad volunteers are here to help.
How we can help
We have over 800 volunteers right across the UK who can give you advice over the phone or visit you at home. Get in touch for help with:
- tuning in your digital radio
- learning to use your landline or mobile phone
- getting the most out of your Freeview, satellite and cable TV
- setting up your DVD player and audio description
- setting up a new computer or laptop, or items like a new printer or monitor
- setting up your internet connection
- installing computer software such as Microsoft Office or JAWS
- investigating - and fixing - problems with an existing computer
- using your eBook reader or DAISY Talking Book.
This is only a handful of the many ways that our Technology Support Squad volunteers can help you. So if you have a new technology product or gadget and you don't know how to set it up or access the basic features, get in touch. No problem is too small for us!
Technology has helped Miriam, who is blind, keep in touch with friends on email, socialise online and catch up with her favourite TV programmes. Thanks to one of our Technology Support Squad volunteers, Miriam has been able to get the most out of technology:
"I was having problems with my internet, so I called the Technology Support Squad. They sent Philip and he fixed it for me, even though the internet provider said they couldn't help me.
Using the internet is really important to me, so it was wonderful that they got the problem fixed so quickly. I would definitely recommend the Technology Support Squad to other blind and partially sighted people. It is a wonderful service and helps me get the most out of technology."
Miriam, TSS user
Who do I contact?
If you require help from the Technology Support Squad, please call our Helpline on 0303 123 9999. Alternatively you can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
How does the service work?
When you call the Helpline, we will take your contact details, and the problem that you need help with.
We will then find a local volunteer who is best able to help you. This volunteer will contact you and, depending on the problem, will either try to help resolve your problem over the telephone, or they will arrange a mutually convenient time to visit you in your home. With your agreement, and only after an initial home visit, our volunteers can also use software to access your computer remotely to solve problems.
You should hear back from a Technology Support Squad volunteer within seven days, though often you will be contacted within 48 hours of your initial call.
Please note that we are unable to provide an emergency service.
Is there anything I can't get help with?
Our volunteers are trained to help people set up and use home IT and technology. We are unable to assist in the following areas:
- Training on how to use computers
- Providing advice on the correct product to buy
- Demonstrations of different products
- Purchasing products and services
- Problems with equipment in work places and educational establishments.
Who are the volunteers?
Our volunteers are specialists in IT and technology and go through our recruitment process, which includes reference and safeguarding checks, before they become a member of the Squad. We aim to assist everyone who requests our help. While we try to cover the whole of the UK, unfortunately we cannot guarantee that we will have a volunteer in your local area who is able to resolve your problem. If we are not able to help you, with your permission, we can pass your details to other RNIB Group services or other charities who might be able to help.
