When widow Marjorie Mundy (now 77) began to lose her sight at 70, she didn't anticipate she was going to lose the confidence and ability to continue her life-long love and hobby of cooking.
Now registered partially sighted, her little known eye condition, Temporal Arteritis, has left her with a tiny pinprick of vision in her left eye and little sight in her right eye.
A former nurse and shorthand typist before her sight loss, Marjorie, originally from South Wales, had also been a County Supervisor for the Woman's Royal Voluntary Service. Due to her sight loss, venturing outside her flat became difficult. Spending more time at home but minus the confidence to cook became a major frustration and problem for Marjorie.
How Marjorie has been helped
Marjorie was supported by RNIB and received free kitchen products via our partnership with British Gas under the here to HELP project.
Marjorie says
"RNIB supplied me with special kitchen products that help blind and partially sighted people to cook. I received a set of Tactile Kitchen Scales, an Easy to See Timer, some bright orange stickers to help make out the knobs on my cooker and 'Big Ben', that's what I call my kitchen clock with extra big numbers. These products gave me the confidence to get back to cooking as before - thanks to RNIB I'm now able to cook again - it really has made a difference to me."
Marjorie now cooks everything from Christmas cakes to marmalade and once again she's a dab hand in the kitchen. She often sells her produce to raise money for RNIB and other charities. She added: "I look at it this way. RNIB supplied me with the products that helped me find the confidence to cook again - selling what I cook is the result of RNIB inspiring me to raise money for charity."
