Ocado - Website of the Month February 2013

Post details

Ocado is one of the less known supermarket delivery companies in the UK. The great thing is they offer all of your groceries and deliver straight to your home.

Why is Ocado Website of the Month?

Whilst we all need to do our weekly shopping it can sometimes be a real task to get to the supermarket, fight for a trolley and then try and find everything you need. Whilst supermarkets are getting better with services for people with sight loss it can be a problem when things are moved around and there are restacking trolleys in the aisles. So why not have someone else do your shopping for you and have it delivered to your fridge door?

Ocado's website is very easy to use. A simple, accessible sign up page allows you to get access to the main shopping pages. Here it will ask about your family, how many adults, children or pets are in the house in order to make suggestions for things you may have forgotten, it also shows you the special offers.

There is an easy to use search function where you can search the whole range of products, for example search milk and it will display all of the different sizes and types of milk. Once you have completed your order you will be sent an email receipt for your records. The next time you come to do your shopping it will even remember your favourite items to save you having to search for them again!

The website is very easy for people with sight loss to navigate both with a screen reader and magnification.

User comment:

We heard from Léonie Watson who tells us why she uses Ocado.

"Ocado has given a lot of thought to customer experience, and the result is a whole range of features that are particularly helpful to blind and partially sighted people. Little things like the text messages to tell you the name of your delivery driver, and big things like the accessible website, all make shopping at Ocado much more enjoyable than you'd expect!

They price match with Tesco, and they also have a range of passes to help you save money. We have the delivery pass because we shop there weekly, and it reduces each delivery to about £2 over the course of the year. We also have one of the saving passes, which gives us 10% off about 600 items.

Every single one of their drivers has been pleasant and courteous. They always offer to carry the shopping through to the kitchen for me if that would be helpful.

They send you a receipt by email. It's a PDF which hasn't been tagged, but it's still readable with a screen reader. The receipt also tells you which products should be used on the day of delivery, within 24 hours, within a week and so forth.

The website is easy to use. The only accessibility problem I've come across to date (which I've reported) is that you can't select a rating if you're reviewing a product".

Got a suggestion?

We want to hear from you, our users. Which apps and websites should we be writing about on the TechKnowMore blog? Is there an app you can no longer live without? What website is at the top of your favourites list?
