eBooks: what can they offer me?

Post details

Are you a keen reader? Do you find it difficult to get hold of the books you want to read in the format you need? If so, you may want to consider eBooks.

The 'e' in 'eBook' stands for 'electronic'. So, an eBook is simply a book, newspaper or magazine in electronic text format.

Most new titles as well as more and more old ones are published as an eBook at the same time as the standard print edition. So if you can read an eBook, you can gain access to thousands of new books every year at the same time and price as sighted readers.

If eBooks are fully accessible they can be read in one of three ways, as:

  • large print by enlarging the font size
  • audio by using synthetic speech
  • braille by using an electronic refreshable Braille display

eBooks can be read using a dedicated eBook reading device, on a PC or laptop, a tablet or smart phone. However not all reading methods are available on every device or through every app or programme.

To find out more about eBooks and how they may offer a reading solution for you, as well as for reviews of the accessibility pros and cons of various ebook reading methods, visit rnib.org.uk/ebooks or visit a local retailer to try the range of devices for yourself.
