Converting a PDF with Kurzweil 1000

Post details

Formats come and go but PDF has been around for an age and is likely to continue to be very popular across all platforms in the future. It has presented its fair share of accessible information issues during its time, with several strategies for dealing with troublesome files. One of those strategies is converting the PDF content to electronic text - something that OpenBook and K1000 users will probably be well used to.

Thankfully, there are more accessible PDF files around these days but you will stumble on the odd troublemaker now and again. If you have K1000 this is what you can do about it:
  1. Launch K1000 with Alt Control K.
  2. Press Control O to launch the Open File dialog box.
  3. Tab to the Files of Type option and set it to 'All Files'.
  4. Tab to the Look In combo box and navigate to the appropriate drive and/or folder.
  5. Tab to the main list then locate and select the relevant PDF file.
  6. When you open the file, K1000 will receive the PDF and treat it as an image, so you will skip straight to the recognition phase.
  7. After conversion, the text will be spoken as usual.

Note: If the PDF file you are converting has a password then you may be prompted for this when the file opens. Without the correct password your only option will be to cancel.
