Controlling the amount of punctuation JAWS will say often causes an outbreak of head scratching. This is because the punctuation option controls are situated perhaps not where you might expect! Here is a blow-by-blow account on finding them!
-
With focus on JAWS, use Alt+O to open up the JAWS Options menu
-
From the Options menu, locate the Voices item and press your right arrow key to expand and move to the Voices submenu
-
You should now hear JAWS announce either "Global Adjustment dot dot dot" if you are using version 10, or "Voice Adjustment dot dot dot" if you are on version 12. When you hear this press your ENTER key. If you can't hear it, press your up arrow until you do.
-
You are now in the Global Voices Dialogue box (or Voice Adjustment Dialogue box in version 12) which is divided into sections. These boxes in JAWS 10 and 12 are a little different to each other, so simply press TAB until you hear JAWS (in either version) say "Voice Punctuation combo box". It sits in the Voices section of the Dialogue box.
-
This combo box controls how much punctuation JAWS will announce. There are 4 options to choose from so use your arrow keys until you find the one you want. The options are: "All", "Most", "Some", and "None".
-
Finally, Tab to the OK button and activate it or use keystroke Alt+O which does the same thing.
