Insight Radio - Website of the month, January 2012

Post details

Post details

Insight Radio is the radio station of RNIB and broadcasts music, information and interviews round the clock. The website allows you to listen to the station live, catch up with a show you missed, or browse the schedule. There's also information about the presenters or other news.

Insight Radio is the first European radio station for blind and partially sighted listeners, and all the presenters are themselves visually impaired.

Why is Insight Radio a featured website?

A new version of the website was launched recently, and it includes a number of accessibility enhancements:

  • Headings are used to break up the information on each page, and screen reader users can easily move between headings to find something quickly.
  • There are options for changing the size and colour of text through a toolbar that floats at the right hand edge of and half way down the screen. Because it's on every page, and because it floats at the same position on the screen, it's easy to find.

More broadly, the site is well laid out with clearly labelled pages and not too much information on each page.

User comments

Bim Egan, a ZoomText and JAWS user, had this to say:

It's a real delight to see the improved accessibility in the Insight Radio web site's accessibility. We are very pleased that they have made it good enough to richly deserve RNIB's Surf Right logo. Working with them to achieve this impressive result was a pleasure too, the enthusiasm and efforts that went into overcoming issues is heart-warming. Steven, who managed the project and Gordon, who did the hard graft were both positive and dedicated to find solutions, even when they had to battle to find them. It was clear that we were all on the same side, with the same goal, and that Insight Radio would become one of the most accessible sites on the web.

Tips and tricks

  1. You can also increase magnification in many browsers with a shortcut like Ctrl + Plus to make everything bigger, or Ctrl + Minus to make it smaller.
  2. Send feedback to the site through their contact page.
  3. There's an Insight Radio app for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch so you can listen while on the move!
