Jane Renton kindly agreed to review the Gym and play ball (GS03) with her three children: Lily, aged five, Talulla, aged three, and her nine year-old sighted son. Both Lily and Tallula have the eye condition Hereditary Cone Dystrophy and are large print readers. Lily also has a high amount of energy!
First impressions
The product is a smooth rubber ball. It is smaller than a football, but not as small as a tennis ball. It is a burnt orange colour, with no distinguishing marks nor anything to recommend it particularly other than the lovely tinkling of the bells inside.
With my children having useful vision - though not colour vision - I would have liked the ball to have a high contrast pattern. This would have enhanced their experience and enjoyment in playing with the ball and would have added extra sensory stimulation.
Activities
Despite its relatively humble appearance, my girls loved this ball! Having three children in the house - their older brother is in Sherwood FC - we own a great many balls, and yet this was their preferred choice.
As soon as the packaging was open, the ball was pounced on and followed with squeals of delight. We threw it and kicked it - the girls chased it and hid it. The cat loved it too!
It is a particularly simple and appealing toy, but also effective and fit for purpose. It is very sturdy and the bells are clearly audible and - unusual for a child's toy - not annoying in the slightest. In contrast to other balls with rice inside, it was streets ahead.
Conclusions
As it was for my children, I think it will be for any VI person playing with this ball. It is easy to locate, and is sturdy and practical. Playing outside was pleasurable too, with the added bonus of the game carrying on despite both girls severe photophobia.
My sighted son likes it, which is quite a compliment, given the fashion for nine year olds to appear underwhelmed. At one point we even had to put it away, as it became too popular at calmer times!
The Gym and play ball has much to recommend it. Simplicity and effectiveness are often underrated, and this is a good example of both of these virtues. Perhaps a solid zigzag or spots might jolly it up a little, but this is the reliable Trabant of the ball world - and none the worse for that.
