Applying as a disabled student

Post details

Don't underestimate the amount of support you can be given!

I have always been fiercely independent and really struggled to ask for help at school and consequently really struggled there.

I was unable to read the board and refused to have a learning assistant, which now seems to be tantamount to shooting myself in the foot! So for university I made the effort to be open and get the help I needed to access the learning environment fully.

I don't know about anyone else but I found the student finance system were brilliant. I got funding for loads of equipment and any extra help they thought would be beneficial, such as a proof reader. The equipment included an Echo Smart Pen, which I would highly recommend as it allows you to make notes which can then be uploaded onto the computer and changed into text. It also doubles up as a Dictaphone so you can record lectures and link it to your notes.

Though a word of advice would be to start the process sooner rather than later. I left my finance application until September which meant they couldn't deliver any equipment until late October, so definitely be proactive and don't let the forms sit on the side all summer (like me).

Also I would advise contacting the university disability office, if you indicated you were disabled on your UCAS form they may make the first move but there's no harm in making contact. At UCL they were really helpful and explained things like how to claim back extra printing and photocopying credit. Plus they set up a meeting between my faculty's 'teaching and learning manager' and we were able to discuss whether the department itself could do anything to help. People genuinely wanted to help as must as possible, which was really encouraging and confidence boosting.
