At the end of last year the BBC announced cuts to their radio programmes. Although I understand that these cuts were necessary, I don't feel that they will benefit the BBC in the long run. Reducing the content of programmes is not the way to go about it and I think that other ways could be found to save money.
I am angry about the cuts to live music in particular. This aspect of the BBC's output had improved so much over the years, and is one of the reasons that Radio 2 has appealed to me as a younger listener. In Concert was my favourite programme on the station as it showcased up-and-coming bands and singers as well as established ones in its Support Slot.
For instance, there was once a session from one of my favourite folk singers, Bella Hardy, and I felt it was important that she was given the opportunity to perform on a show like that as it exposed her music to a different audience.
Unfortunately, the In Concert programme is no longer on air, and I am extremely upset about this.
Live music is now played on Dermot O'Leary and Bob Harris's shows, and I hope this continues as it showcases musicians from the genres of folk and country. Without live music, Radio 2 will become a boring station and may even lose some younger listeners.
I believe the cuts will have a negative impact on the station and could result in destroying the quality and variety of live music it has become known for broadcasting.
