Designing products for teenagers

Post details

I'm 17 and I want to study product design at university. At the moment, I'm taking design technology as one of my A-Levels, so over this summer I have to decide on a topic for my A-level project and research it.

I use only one eye to see with but because of operations to my eyes it means I can see well enough with glasses. After my operations I used aids to help while my sight recovered, and this has made me really interested in the design of products for people with disabilities and how products can improve life for anyone.

Because of my eye sight, I got the idea to look into designing products for visually impaired teenagers. But I haven't found anything that is made specifically for teenagers that's designed to aid with any problems caused by sight loss.

Have you come across anything? It would be great to know about your experiences using aids to help with your sight, which ones worked for you and what you would like to see more of.

Please post your ideas for my project below and I will keep you updated!

Hello

I'm not visually impaired but I used to support children & teenagers who were.

I can't think of any technology specifically designed for teenagers but the most apt I can think of are as follows:

1) Talking alarm clock- just a normal digital clock but has a button you can press and it will say the time to you.

2) Liquid indicator- Small battery powered device that you fit at top of glass which buzzes when the glass is full.

3) Talking microwave- Each button tells you what it is I.e. settings & timings when you press them.

4) I haven't seen one of these but have heard there is a device that you can scan over clothes etc to tell you what colour they are to enable people to colour coordinate when getting dressed.

As I said, these are products for all ages but I think are particularly helpful for teenagers who want to become more independent and rely less on others to support them.

Hope you find this helpful :-)

Good luck!
