Bullying: What to do

Stopping the bullying

If you think you are being bullied, you need to tell an adult. If your school has an anti-bullying system, use it to get help. If you're not sure how it works then talk to a teacher.

Some schools ignore bullying, but don't become resigned to being a victim. You can still help yourself and ask others to help you.

Please don't ignore bullying. Don't let the bullies get away with thinking that no-one will do anything.

Don't wait - tell a parent, a teacher or a friend that you are being bullied.

How to respond to bullies

  • Try to ignore the bullying, turn and walk away confidently.
  • Try not to show that you are upset or angry.
  • Don't fight back if you can avoid it. It's not worth getting hurt to keep possessions or money.
  • Try to think up funny or clever replies in advance.
  • Try to avoid being alone in the places where you know the bully is likely to pick on you.
  • Sometimes asking the bully to repeat what they said can put them off.
  • Keep a diary of what is happening.
  • Being bullied can make you feel upset and angry. Try not to show these feelings to the bullies - practise walking and speaking confidently. Holding your head up straight can help you to look confident.
