Gardening is a popular and relaxing pastime which you can continue or start to enjoy when you have sight loss. RNIB works closely with Thrive to make gardening more accessible. Thrive is a small national charity that uses gardening to help disabled people transform their lives.

RNIB, in partnership with Thrive, has developed a wide range of services which provide information and guidance to gardeners who have sight loss.

Produced by RNIB in association with Thrive, this factsheet provides advice, information and contact details to help blind and partially sighted people to access gardening.

Thrive

Thrive can also provide you with useful hints and tips from other gardeners who have sight loss, opportunities for you to meet other gardeners and a wide range of services, these include:
  • Get Gardening a CD with information about joining the National Blind Gardeners' Club and inspirational stories from people who have sight loss and who have continued gardening.
  • Gardening Starter Pack which includes seeds and is packed full of ideas and gardening tips for spring, summer, autumn and winter.
  • How to set up a local gardening club - this guide can help you to start your own club. Thrive can also put you in contact with a blind gardeners' club near your home.
  • Gardening advice by telephone, email or post to help you with any gardening questions you may have
  • Carry on gardening website brings you easier ways to do everyday gardening jobs with tried and tested gardening equipment and tools for people who have sight loss.

National Blind Gardeners' Club

The benefits of joining The National Blind Gardeners Club include:

  • Come Gardening a quarterly magazine which has interesting plant reviews, ideas for food and flower gardening, details of new tools and equipment and features on readers' gardens and their top tips. The magazine is available in large print, cassette, Braille, CD, floppy disk or email. Access to a specialist gardening library.
  • A regular e-newsletter with seasonal gardening information and tips.

The cost of joining is £30.00 a year. If you join now you will receive a free copy of the Gardening Yearbook with 55 pages of seasonal advice on your food and flower garden plus tools and equipment.
