There's detailed coverage of the Queen's official Jubilee tour and celebrations, plus ways in which you can get involved in this historic occasion.

Talking Freeview plus HD Recorder (TVonics DTR-HD 500)

TVonics, a British manufacturer of Freeview set-top-boxes, and Ivona, a text-to-speech service, have been working in collaboration with RNIB to launch a digital TV and Freeview plus HD recorder that talks, making this easier to use for people with sight loss. You can record your favourite programmes so you never miss an episode or pause and rewind live television so you can make a cup of tea.

The new product uses Ivona's text-to-speech technology which is one of the most natural-sounding voices available. It enables blind and partially sighted viewers to easily navigate the electronic programme guide. It guides you confidently through features including channel selection, recording and accessing recorded programmes.

The TVonics DTR-HD 500 also:

  • has a choice of high contrast colours to make menus and programme guides easier to read;
  • has an easy-to-use remote control with well-spaced, raised buttons and a dedicated "audio description" button;
  • is easy to set up with your existing TV and is supplied with an HDMI cable.

The TVonics DTR-HD 500 (product code TV 06) is available to buy direct from our online shop at rnib.org.uk/shop or call the Helpline on 0303 123 9999. It is priced £179.99 inc VAT, plus £7.50 inc VAT for postage.

If you have already purchased the TVonics recorder without the talking and high contrast menus you can download the software free from our online shop.

The recorder is available on the high street but at the moment you will have to download and install the accessible software and the manufacturer's instructions do not include details of the new talking features. If you require full instructions but have not purchased from RNIB direct then there will be a small charge for the instructions. Call us on 0303 123 9999 to find out more.
