audio and midi sequencing editors

Audio and MIDI sequencing editors

These software packages are used to record, edit and manipulate audio and MIDI. There are a huge range of software and hardware products available in this field, catering for amateurs and professionals alike.

We make every effort to ensure the information in this section is correct and up-to-date, but please contact us by email at mas@rnib.org.uk if you think we have missed something.

Cakewalk Sonar

Currently the most accessible package for screen reader users is Cakewalk Sonar. Sonar can be made accessible to JAWS using either CakeTalking from Dancing Dots, or the free open-source J-Sonar scripts from the J-Sonar Project.

Reaper

Reaper (Rapid Environment for Audio Production, Engineering, and Recording) is a digital audio workstation (DAW) produced by Cockos. It has been in rapid development since 2005. Reaper has been praised by established sources such as Sound On Sound magazine for its low impact on system resources and drive space, as well as being extremely customisable by the user.

Benefits

  • Compatible with Windows or MAC OSX operating systems
  • Can run from a memory stick with no installation necessary
  • Can be evaluated for an unlimited time before being licensed.

Accessibility for magnification users

Almost every part of Reaper's user interface can be customised by installing additional themes, which are shared freely on a page of the Reaper website known as the Stash. Themes are compatible with the Windows and Mac OSX versions of Reaper.

Accessibility for screen reader users

In December 2009, an accessibility bridge called ReaAccess was released for Windows screen reader users. As of October 2010, this project enables equal levels of accessibility for users of JAWS, Window-Eyes, NVDA, and System Access.

At present, ReaAccess only enables additional accessibility in Windows. As with Reaper itself, ReaAccess is a project under constant development and the ReaAccess website is currently not working correctly.

Who is it for?

If you need an accessible multitrack audio and MIDI editor, you're familiar with technology, and the prospects of regular changes and updates appeal to your inner geek, then Reaper just might be for you!

Resources

The Reaper website contains links to download an evaluation copy and purchase the software, as well as documentation and links to the user forum. You can download the ReaAccess bridge from the ReaAccess website.

Quick Windows Sequencer

Quick Windows Sequencer is an accessible midi sequencer developed by James Bowden. The QWS website gives links to download the software and documentation, as well as articles and sound files. There is an email discussion list for users of the software.
