Starting school

When your child is ready to move on from an early years setting to start school, it's important to discuss options with your visiting teacher (QTVI).

You should be offered information on the schools available for your child. This may be the local school, a mainstream school that has a specific resource for children with a sight problem, or a special school, including schools specifically for blind and partially sighted children.

Finding a suitable school

Most blind and partially sighted children are educated in mainstream schools but some attend special schools or are educated at home. See finding a suitable school for more information on the options.

Your local school should make provision for your child, but may not have a specific resource for children with a sight problem.

You can find also support by visiting HelpinSight which is a parent's website which lists mainstream schools in the UK that have specific resources for blind and partially sighted children and don't forget to check out our information about special schools in the UK.
