Staff and students at RNIB Pears Centre marked World Book Day 2012 by holding a theme day that all students from the school were involved with.
Staff and students came to school dressed as characters from their favourite books. There were some truly amazing costumes, in particular the 'Hungry Caterpillar', Woody from Toy Story, Ali Barbar and Hermione Grainger from the Harry Potter books. The Headmaster even came in as Tin Tin!
Variety of activities
During the course of the day the students participated in a variety of activities. First of all they listened to an extract from Roald Dahl's 'The Twits' all about Mr Twits horrible smelly hairy face. They then made their own smelly beards full of old pieces of food like cheese and fish tails! Students then listened to the story of 'The Gingerbread Man' and then made their own gingerbread men, including decorating them. There was also a rota of activities for students to explore such as visiting the new school library and listening to a story of their choice and exploring a jungle environment in the multisensory room and listening to the story of 'The Jungle Book'.
Awards for the best costumes
In the afternoon all of the students joined together for prizes to be awarded for the best costumes and to hear our own made up story. This was a tactile book which each class had contributed a chapter to over the previous week. As each class did not quite know what the other had written putting it all together was very funny - it was an exciting story that made amusing reading!
Overall the day was a great success and enabled stories new and old to be brought to life!
