Rushton achieves Good rating in Ofsted report

December 2009

"A safe, happy and joyous place"

RNIB Rushton School and Children's Home has achieved a 'Good' rating in a recent Ofsted inspection.

Our school is described as effective, welcoming and a safe, happy and joyous place. The outstanding way young people are cared for and nurtured was particularly commended.

Ofsted report findings

The report praised the close links between care staff and educational staff, stating:

"Pupils make good progress against their targets for learning and in developing their communication and personal and social skills.

"When they leave the sixth form they are well prepared to live as independent a life as is possible… The close link between the staff of the Children's Home and the school ensures that any specific advice or programme developed for pupils is consistently applied in both settings."

Inspectors praised our child focused protocols and highly individualised support. Our "communication passports" for each young person were described as excellent.

Andy Moran, Head of Education, said:

"We are extremely pleased with the very positive Ofsted report that reflects all of the important developments that are taking place at Rushton. In particular we are delighted that care, guidance and support are recognised as being outstanding!"

Brenda Smith, Head of Care, commented:

"I feel very proud. These awarded outcomes clearly recognise the hard work and achievement of all of our staff who are dedicated to the support of young people with complex needs and sight loss."
