On Tuesday 22 May 2012, the Lord Mayor Elect, Councillor Tim Sawdon and the Lady Mayoress Elect, Mrs Nicky Sawdon, officially opened the newly installed garden at RNIB Pears Centre for Specialist Learning in Coventry, North Warwickshire. RNIB Pears Centre provides individually-tailored education, care and therapies to children and young people with complex needs and sight problems.
Award-winning RNIB Garden
The RNIB Garden won a Silver Gilt Medal in the Urban Garden Category at last year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The inspiration behind the garden was the 'experience of the senses'. The charity and designer aimed, through the garden, to build awareness and understanding of what it's like to live with sight loss. The garden is now in the grounds of RNIB Pears Centre and will be enjoyed by the young people and their families for many years to come.
Garden Designer, Paul Hervey-Brookes, said: "The RNIB Garden is not only something the children at the Centre will enjoy but also help others to empathise with blind and partially sighted people. I am thrilled to be involved with RNIB and to bring a piece of Chelsea here to the Midlands."

At the event, the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress met some of the children and young people who attend RNIB Pears Centre. They were joined by 80 other guests to celebrate the opening of the award-winning garden, which is part of a major redevelopment to provide state-of-the-art living and learning facilities for blind and partially sighted children and young people with complex needs, from across the UK.
