At the primary stage, education for your child is about becoming more independent of adult help and learning more about the world in which they live.
The main objectives in primary school are the same for all children:
-
access to the curriculum and thereby to fulfil their potential
-
to be increasingly able to be independent of adult help.
There will be challenges along the way, but by working with the Qualified Teacher of Visually Impaired children (QTVI) and school staff, these challenges can usually be worked through so that your child is included and has a positive experience. Encourage your child to develop the attitude "I can" or "I can, with a bit of help" rather than "I can't do it".
Things to aim for
By the end of primary school, your child should be very independent in working and accessing the curriculum.
If they started learning braille and keyboard skills in the early stages, they should now be reasonably competent and independent in these skills.
There is a lot you can do to support your child in becoming more independent. You will need to work with school staff and a QTVI to find the best ways of doing this. This process is important for having a good foundation to build on when your child goes to secondary school.
