Starting primary

Starting full time school is a huge step for all children, but it can be an anxious time for blind and partially sighted children and their parents. Accessing the curriculum and making friends is a worry for parents and teachers alike.

Which school should my child attend?

Which school will your child attend? As parents, you should be actively involved in this decision.

The chosen school is likely to be your local primary school. This gives your child the opportunity to continue the friendships started at nursery and in the local neighbourhood. It will also provide you, as parents, with a supportive network of people who are experiencing similar anxieties as you.

For more details, see school options.

Planning ahead

Teachers, parents, school staff and other professionals all have a role to play in planning ahead. It's important to use the support that's available to help your child get the best possible access to the curriculum and get the best out of school life.

The specialist teacher (QTVI) should be the pivot of this team work and planning.
