Autism: Managing challenging behaviours through communication friendly environments

This session will focus on managing challenging behaviours through the use of clear communication and enabling environments. It will encourage you to reflect on your own practice and consider what positive strategies can be put in place to support a child with autism who exhibits challenging behaviour.

SENCOS, teachers and LSAs who support children with autism in mainstream and special schools

Learning objectives

  • To briefly review the classification of autism
  • To define challenging behaviours in a range of settings and understand some of the triggers
  • To understand the term a "communication friendly environment"
  • To know some of the observational tools available and compose an individual positive behaviour plan.
