BBC Proms 2013

The BBC Proms is the world's greatest classical music festival. Opening at the Royal Albert Hall on Friday 12 July and closing on Saturday 7 September 2013.

Some 70 concerts are staged and Proms in the Park events around the country coincide with the famous Last Night with Terry Wogan hosting the event from Hyde Park on Saturday 7 September. Special guests include Bryan Ferry, Nigel Kennedy and Dame Edna Everage.

What's on

If you haven't been to the Proms before, this is the year to change that. You don't need to know all your classical composers but you'll certainly recognise their music, and it's not all classics. From Electric to Chamber music, Urban to Hollywood Rhapsody and the roof raising Last night. Visit the BBC website for help choosing a concert for your family, group of friends or a special date. Some things you can look forward to this year include:

Doctor Who

Celebrating 50 years of the Doctor's time travel adventures on Saturday 13 July. As well as showcasing Murray Gold's music from the past eight years, the concert also journeys back to the early days of Doctor Who and the groundbreaking work of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Featuring special guests from the series, big screens and a host of monsters ready to invade the Royal Albert Hall, this is not the year to be exterminated! Highlights from the concert will be shown on BBC one.

Gospel and Urban music

The meeting and mixing of music from four continents. Lead soloists combine with choirs to create a thrilling massed wall of sound for favourites such as "How Great Thou Art", O' Happy Day" and Swing Low, Sweet Chariot". Music inspired by soul and funk merges with Caribbean and African traditions and "Naturally 7" are fresh from performances at the O2 Arena supporting Michael Buble. Their inimitable a cappella sound and inventive arrangements of songs such as Phil Collins "In the air tonight" and George Harrison's "While my guitar gently weeps" - seven voices, no intruments and one incredible sound. Highlights from the Urban classic Prom will be shown on BBC three.
