Do you find it difficult to get hold of the books you want to read in the format you need? If so you might want to consider ebooks. If ebooks are accessible they can be read in three ways by:
-
adjusting or magnifying the font to suit your requirements
-
using a refreshable braille display, or
-
using the synthetic speech feature to listen to the text
Lots of books are now available to buy as ebooks at the same time as the print book is published. Some local public libraries are stocking ebooks too.
Many blind and partially sighted people are already delighted with the new opportunities for reading which are opening up. Would you like to find out whether ebooks might have something to offer you?
-
ask us for our leaflet "Ebooks: what can they offer me?" by calling the RNIB Helpline: 0303 123 9999 (it's available in print, braille and audio)
-
visit the RNIB ebooks website
-
come along to our ebook event on 16 August 2011 at RNIB's London offices (no need to book)
Although there are so many advances already, there's still a lot of work still to be done so that ebooks can be accessible for everyone. RNIB is working with organisations who can help make this possible including the people who publish and sell ebooks and the people who make the devices and software for reading them. It is a very exciting time, and we will keep our website updated with developments.
" I find it amazing to be able to read again." Sarah, who is registered blind.
