RNIB National Library Service recently donated a consignment of books to Kenya Albino Child Support (KACSU) to help establish a resource library for students.
KACSU is a non profit organisation based in Nairobi with the aim of helping children with albinism improve their chances in life by providing access to education and other basic necessities.
RNIB National Library Service has started a penfriend group between young library members and KACSU children. The group is fully moderated and children can correspond in braille, print or email. The penfriends are growing in number and the plan is to advertise for more over the coming months.
African children with albinism can sometimes live away from their communities and the group is just one way of helping to overcome isolation. The Penfriend group is a fun way for children to further develop their knowledge about books and learn more about another country and cuture too.
We have just begun to exchange the first wave of letters and feedback indicates that the group will be a great success!
