With 750,000 children aged 4-11 taking part, the Summer Reading Challenge is the biggest national reading initiative. It runs in libraries throughout the summer holidays, with incentives, activities and events designed to create a real buzz around children's reading. The challenge is simple - to read six or more library books over the summer.
"[The Challenge] has really helped my children turn the corner in their reading- from it being a chore to being a pleasure. It has made a huge difference to all our lives!" Parent of 8 year old, Essex
The theme for this year's national Summer Reading Challenge is Circus Stars. It runs in libraries throughout the summer holidays, with incentives, activities and events designed to create a real buzz around children's reading. The challenge is simple - to read six or more library books over the summer.
Children can read any books they like, including audio, braille and giant print books from RNIB National Library Service. Each time they read a book, they get a sticker and if they read all six books they get a medal and certificate. As in previous years, we are working with The Reading Agency to provide accessible information packs for libraries to give to blind and partially sighted children and there will be a braille congratulations message on certificates.
The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to get children interested in books and reading, especially during the long school holiday when reading can take a dip. Just pop down to your local library to ask for a pack and get involved. To find out more, contact our Children's Librarians on 0161 355 2061 or email childrenslibrarian@rnib.org.uk
