Charles Dickens (1812- 1870)

Dickens' Dream by Robert William Buss

It's 200 years since one of our most famous authors was born. Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, the second of eight children. He, like many of his characters, experienced hardship. While his father and family were imprisoned in Marchalsea, the debtors prison, he was sent to work in Warren's Blacking factory where he endured appalling conditions. Through many of his novels he raised awareness of the social injustice that was endured by many people during the Victorian era and during his life he championed the plight of the working class.
He started as a journalist and went on to write numerous novels along side plays, travel guides and weekly magazines.
