St Andrew's Day

Tartan cloth (Bruce clan)

To celebrate all things Scottish in honour of St Andrew's Day we put together a wee collection of books:

  • The world, the flesh and the Devil by Reay Tannahill.
This draws heavily on events in the Scotland of over 500 years ago ringing rather shadowy historical characters to full colourful life. The book chronicles the fortunes of the Camerons of Kinveil. Braille 7 vols; TB 9214.

  • In bed with an elephant by Ludovic Kennedy.
This book a blend of history, travel, politics and autobiography. Ludovic Kennedy writes about the aspects of Scotland that excite him and in particular Scotland's rather stormy relationship with England over the centuries. Braille 11 vols.

  • Rob Roy by Sir Walter Scott
Set in the north of England and Scotland in the years before, during and after the first Jacobite rising in 1715. Rob Roy is a swashbuckling chieftain of the clan MacGregor. Braille 11 vols; TB 4724.

  • Damage land : new Scottish gothic fiction
A collection of contemporary Scottish gothic fiction. Braille 3 vols.

  • Of fish and men: tales of a Scottish fisher by David C Watson
A collection of anecdotes from nearly forty years of fishing, linked by a commentary on the author's life and times. The book is about much more than fishing; it is about characters and countyside, and about the struggle to forge a life and career in Scotland during the depression of the 1970s and 1980s. TB 13415.

  • The hills is lonely by Lillian Beckwith
When Lillian Beckwith advertised for a quiet, secluded place in the country, she received the following unorthodox description of the attractions of life in an isolated Hebridean croft; 'Surely it's that quiet even the sheep themselves on the hills is lonely, and as to the sea, it's that near as I use it myself everyday for the refusals...' Braille 5vols; TB 11948.

  • Scotland, the growing divide: old nation, new ideas by Henry McLeish.
With Scotland facing a referendum on its independence in autumn 2014, the authors focus on the changing face of politics. A thorough discussion of the arguments reaches several provocative conclusions. Soon available as a Talking Book.
