Lost for words: shopping

Whether you're a budding chef or hopeless in the kitchen, you rely on your sight to read everything from recipes to 'use by' dates.

So imagine how you would cope with everyday shopping and cooking if you couldn't read prices or instructions?

For nearly two million people with significant sight problems, inaccessible information can mean the difference between doing things safely and with confidence, and doing them with difficulty or not at all.

How we help

Products like our PenFriend audio labeller make a huge difference, helping people to label and use every day items with ease.

Portable magnifiers help partially sighted people to make the most of what they can see.

Go! Shop is a new RNIB project bringing blind and partially sighted people together with retail and transport companies to improve the shopping experience, from getting to the shops to paying for goods.

We have teamed up with Debenhams to launch an enhanced personal shopping service for blind and partially sighted customers to make shopping for clothes easy and enjoyable. The new service was inspired by Gok Wan's "How to Look Good Naked" TV programme, which explored the relationship blind women have with fashion.

The Equality Act 2010 makes it easier for people who have lost their sight to be protected from unfair treatment and be part of a more equal society.

We work with retailers to help them comply with the Equality Act and continue to make life easier for blind and partially sighted people by developing new products for reading information independently.

How you can help

Retailers can get in touch to find out how to help meet blind and partially sighted customers' needs.

Blind and partially sighted people can use our Challenging service providers toolkit to take action using the Equality Act.
