eBooks

What are eBooks?

The 'e' in 'eBook' stands for 'electronic'. So, an eBook is simply a book in electronic format. They have the potential to be accessible as they can be read as audio, braille or large print, allowing you to choose the method that works for you.

Books are now often published in eBook format at the same time as the print edition. If you can read eBooks you can have access to thousands of books at the same time as sighted readers.

How do I read using eBooks?

You can read eBooks using a dedicated eBook reader such as the Amazon Kindle, a multi-functional device such as the iPad, or use software on your computer or mobile phone. Different eBook readers offer different types and levels of accessibility so it's important to find one that suits your needs.

Where can I get eBooks?

eBooks are available from online shops and some can be borrowed from public libraries.

eBook reading devices can be tried, tested and bought in many high street stores. They can also be purchased online.

New eBook readers

Many new eBook readers are coming to the market every month. We will add reviews of readers with notable accessibility features to our comparison of eBook readers section.

eBook formats

eBooks come in various different formats. It's important to be aware of the difference between them because not all eBook formats are supported by all eBook readers.
